Planning for the Fall

Advising Week is fast approaching! Between April 4 and 8, faculty, counselors, and staff will be ready to respond to student requests for information and guidance. Advising Week, which immediately precedes the start of Priority Registration for the Fall 2011 semester, gives us a special opportunity to assist students in focusing on their long-term educational and career goals and in making good academic choices to achieve those goals. This is a good opportunity to look at the courses you have taken and those you are planning to take to be sure you are on track for completing your degree or certificate program. What can you do?

Start by pulling up your degree progress report. Your degree progress report will show your placement test scores, then an unofficial transcript, and finally which degree program(s) you are in and what the requirements are. Anything in bold or in red still needs be completed. If you are unsure about what courses can be used to meet fulfill your elective requirements, there is a list available here. Be sure to look carefully at the different lists for Humanities/Fine Arts, Social Sciences, and Physical/Life Sciences/Mathematics.

Also, remember to view the transfer guides and articlation agreements if you plan to transfer after you graduate from NOVA.

Once you have identified the courses you'd like to take, use NOVA Connect (MyNOVA) to view the course offerings for this fall. Choose the sections that work best for your schedule and be sure you have met the prerequisites (click on the course name and it will tell you if there are any prerequisites while giving you details about the course). Once you have chosen your classes, be sure to write down the 5 digit course number so you will be ready to enroll yourself on the first day of registration.

Campuses are organizing a variety of activities to support Advising Week. Virtual Advising also continues to provide opportunities for students to connect through chat or email Sunday through Thursday, 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and Monday through Friday, noon to 2:00 p.m.

By being proactive now, you will make the most of your time this fall with classes you are interested in and scheduled during times that work for you.

Last chance to withdraw

Just a reminder to everyone that your last chance to withdraw from 16-week campus classes is coming up on March 25!

After March 25, students may no longer withdraw themselves from classes. Use of NovaConnect will result in a grade of “F” or “U” being automatically assigned by the system.

Good luck!

It's Advising Week!

This week is a great opportunity to get a jump start on the Spring semester. Counselors, advisors, and faculty are ready to help guide you through the tough decisions of how to continue your progress through your academic program. You can get advice and guidance by going to your faculty advisor, your local counseling center, or logging in to Virtual Advising from 12:00-2:00 p.m. Monday through Friday or 6:00-8:00 p.m. Sunday through Thursday.

Now is a great time to review your Degree Progress Report (see the link on the menu to the left). This will let you know which program you are currently in and help you to identify which requirements you still have remaining.

Advising week is immediately followed by priority registration. For one week only, current NOVA students can register before classes are opened for new students. This is a great opportunity to get the courses you want at the times you need!

To view the latest version of the Spring Schedule, connect through NOVA Connect or navigate to: http://www.nvcc.edu/curschedule/

Just as a quick reminder, if you think you may complete all of your requirements this Spring, you can apply for graduation now! The deadline for Spring Graduation is March 1.

Welcome!

We are pleased that you are interested in attending NOVA. We look forward to working with you. This website is designed to help you with the admissions process here at the college. There is already much information about the process on the NOVA website but we wanted to have an additional space where you can ask questions and comment about the NOVA admissions process, and we can post important updates.

The information on the blog is organized by entries with the most recent at the top. At the end of each entry is a line with the word Comment on it so you can make comments or ask questions about the admissions process.

If you want to leave a comment or ask a question, go to the end of this posted entry and click on Comments. You can then write your comment or question. Next, click on the Publish Your Comment button. Your comment or question will appear in the Comments area. We will respond.
